PROGRAM SCHEDULE

The 200-hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares students to collect blood specimens from patients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Both daytime and evening programs are available. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipuncture competently and safely. Lectures include basic anatomy and physiology with emphasis on the circulatory system, introduction to collection, risk factors and complications, quality assurance in specimen collection as well as professional behavior and responsibilities in patient care settings. Blood collection laboratories, hospitals, blood banks, dialysis centers, plasma collection centers, insurance companies, clinics and physician offices depend on the phlebotomist to collect process and transport quality samples from the patient to produce accurate laboratory results.

WHAT DO PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIANS DO?
The Phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient’s blood specimens by venipuncture and micro collection. Phlebotomists draw blood from patients for testing purposes. They usually work under the supervision of a medical technologists or a laboratory manager.

Classroom instruction: 80 hrs
Clinical instruction: 120 hrs
Program Length: 5 weeks (Daytime Program) or 9 weeks (Evening Program)

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

• ·Age 18 (by completion of training) or older
• ·Admission/Application Fee $2300 (Minimum down payment is $1300)
• ·Authorized to work in the U.S. (Alien ID – If applicable)
• ·Valid Identification (passport, driver’s license or state/ federal issued ID)
• ·Social Security Card
• .High school diploma or GED equivalent
• ·Ability to pass criminal background check (provided by school)
• ·Valid CPR (school provides service at a fee)
• ·Drug Test

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

• ·Immunization Record      
• ·TB Test (PPD skin test or a negative chest X-ray no older than a year is required) School will administer the PPB skin test for free if the test has not been performed within the last year.
• ·Hepatitis B (If declined, it must be waived in writing; form is available in our school administration office)

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

People who are interested in becoming a Phlebotomy Technician are required to take CPR for Medical Professionals and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training prior to starting their clinical rotation. CPR/AED Training is offered by Fast Track for an additional fee. This fee is not included in the tuition.

JOB OUTLOOK

The field of Phlebotomy has greatly expanded in the past several years, and the demand is expected to grow because of the greying of America and the baby boomer generation.  Phlebotomists are employed throughout the health care system—group practices, HMO’s, public health facilities, veteran hospitals, insurance carriers and in other health care settings.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Our Phlebotomy Technician program is approved for national certification testing.

After completing the Phlebotomy Technician training program the graduate will have the option (for an additional fee) to apply and test for the American Certification Agency (ACA) National Exam. The national exam is administered on-site at Fast Track Health Care Education.

A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required to take the national exam.

National Certification is voluntary. It represents not only compliance with established medical standards, but also highlights the health care professional’s commitment to quality and professionalism. Having national certification demonstrates to the healthcare industry that the individual is proficient in his/her specific area of study. National certification is a competency standard and has proven to be a valuable asset in securing employment as well as advancement on any career ladder. Having American Certification Agency (ACA) National Certification gives the health care professional the competitive edge he/she needs in the job search market. To employers it separates the serious from the non-serious, and may well be the deciding factor in obtaining a job or promotion.

Upon successful completion you will have the option to register for the: 

1. American Certification Agency (ACA) National Exam for Phlebotomy Technicians for an additional cost of $120 (this fee is not included in the tuition)

ADVANCED PHLEBOTOMY

This is a one day ten hour course and it is specifically designed for former phlebotomy students and experienced phlebotomists, who would like to become nationally certified, re-certified or would like a little more practice before working in a facility.
